Sentient beings and their values

I while ago I took a course called Environmental Ethics at San Diego State University. It was the most amazing and enlightening class I have ever taken.

I still read the book whenever I have a chance. The philosophy is so complex and so logical at the same time..
It is the best textbook I have ever bought and I enjoy every single time I sit to read a bit of it..

I want to share Peter Singers's thought:

" It is not just humans but the higher animals that can value. We have to move from an anthropogenic to a sentiogenic view. Animals can value on their own, provided that they have preferences that can satisfied or frustrated. A mother free-tailed bat, a mammal like ourselves, can , using sonar, wend her way out of Bracken Cave, in TExas, in total darkness, catch 500-1000 insects each hour on the wing, and return to find and nurse her own young. That gives evidence of bat-valuing; she values the insects and the pup.

It seems absurd to say that there are no valuers until humans arrive. There is no better evidence of nonhuman values and valuers than spontaneous wildlife, born free and on its own. Animals hunt and howl; find shelter; seek out their habitats and mates; care for their young; flee from threats; grow hungry, thirsty, hot, tired, excited, sleepy. They suffer injury and lick their wounds. Here we are quite convinced that value is nonanthropogenic, to say nothing of anthropocentric.

These wild animals defend their own lives because they have a good of their own. There is somebody there behind the fur or feathers. Our gaze is returned by an animals that itself has a concerned outlook. Here is value right before our eyes, right behind those eyes. Animals are valuable, able to value things in their world. But we may still want to say that value exists only where a subject has object of interest"...

Surviving Mesothelioma and Rhio O’ Connor’s Motivational Life-Changing Story

Surviving Mesothelioma and Rhio O’ Connor’s Motivational Life-Changing Story

Fatal illnesses have flourished throughout the years due to countless pollutants that are released into the atmosphere, harmful compounds that are used in consumer products and most importantly, the ignorance of the general public towards these issues. James Rhio O’ Connor (“Rhio”), a sixty-one year old man, was diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma. This type of cancer develops in the lining of the pleura, which is the bilayer membrane enclosing the pleural cavity around the lungs. Mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos, which is a mixture of silicate minerals that is commonly used for insulation of buildings.  According to the National Cancer Institute, asbestos has been used in North America since the 1800s and its use increased during World War II in industry due to its heat, fire and non-conductive properties. Asbestos can be found in steam pipes, plastics, paints, coatings, floor tiles, boilers, and has been utilized for insulations, sound absorption and fireproofing. Rhio’s prognosis was only less than a year and treatment selections to fight this type of cancer were limited. Rhio was not a suitable candidate for surgical removal due to the tumor location near the spine. In addition to this, he chose to avoid chemotherapy, being the most aggressive cancer therapy, killing cells that divide rapidly such as primary cells (skin, hair follicles, bone marrow, digestive track) thus decreasing the patient’s quality of life. In addition to this, Rhio’s desire to live was stronger than anything doctors could say about his determinant cancer status. Therefore, he opted to follow an alternative therapy in which changing his eating habits along with practicing mind-body exercises and opting for a positive attitude would allow him to live 7.5 more years.

Paul Krauss, author of “Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers”, is considered the “longest living mesothelioma survivor in the world”. He is knowledgeable of the use of complementary therapies to fight cancer and states that there are a number of myths regarding cancer treatment. He has defined the difference between alternative and complementary therapies. Both alternative and complementary therapies utilize traditional practices such as acupuncture, naturopathy and herbal remedies. The difference between the two is that complementary therapies combine these traditional therapies with conventional medicine, while alternative medicine does not include conventional medicine. With the help of selected professional practitioners, he was finally able to establish an adequate treatment that allowed him to live much longer. Rhio’s willpower and conviction allowed him to live a nourishing life and demonstrated that fighting this type of cancer and having success is as viable as the person decides.

Because cancer is an illness that has occurred in several members of my family, I decided to start learning more about living a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent the oncoming of illnesses. Krauss states that cancer is not a curing but a healing process. It gives the opportunity to find the role of mind healing through practices that involve body, mind and a healthy lifestyle which involves eating well. The average American is more likely to die from diet and inactivity than from a car accident according to Michael F. Jacobson, PhD.  Robert Ader, PhD, makes the analogy that just as eating is essential for the body to extract all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients necessary to function, indulging our minds and by practicing a mind-body interaction, the healing systems in our bodies will work in order and use minds to promote healing rather than obstruction. Rhio’s  story is inspiring because he demonstrates the power of incorporating these practices which allowed him to reach a stable state of mind and live much longer than expected. Not only this, but his willingness, perseverance and positive attitude supports Krauss’s point that the body’s emotional state will alter the hormonal profiles that influence the biochemistry of the patient along with heart rate and immune functions. Rhio was a brave man who opted to refuse the ordinary therapies and challenged himself to find a more profound way of living and fighting with mesothelioma.

Three years ago, I started a vegetarian diet which is one of the best decisions I have ever made. This diet not only changed the way I used to feel after eating, but forced me to think outside of the box when planning meals. I have noticed that following a whole foods plant based diet has encouraged me to learn about vegetables and fruits that I had never heard of along with amazing recipes rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is one of the best decisions I have made and practicing this lifestyle is a great advantage if one day in the future I were given a cancer prognosis. Exercising 15-20 minutes twice a day, juicing, reading nutrition labels and nutritional articles supported by research studies, learning how to cook and incorporate more fruits, vegetable, grains, nuts and legumes to my diet are all important practices for maintaining good health. I would keep learning more about the properties that each of these can provide to build a strong immune system and would eliminate animal products in my diet as it has been shown that these could induce hypertension, heart attacks, osteoporosis, arthritis just to mention a few, due to the high content in saturated fats, hormones and other chemicals associated with abnormal alteration of a natural being (GMOs or chemical handling) . These can only lead to a protein imbalance, high cholesterol and hormonal crash. Dr. Jacobson states that vegetarians enjoy lower levels of blood cholesterol, less obesity, less hypertension and lower the risk of developing cancer. Krauss states in his book “For a cancer patient to make a dietary change makes sense as smokers who are diagnose with lung cancer to stop smoking”. In addition to this, stress is a main factor that involves psychoneuroimmunological effects. Because of this I would look into a variety of stress relief strategies such as daily cardiovascular exercises, yoga and meditation

Rhio’s positive attitude towards changing daily habits is the first step. Nowadays, we are fortunate to have a worldwide network where we can inform ourselves easily. However, looking in the right place is vital. Research consists of careful and detailed long term studies that are based on observations and reliable results from previous experimentation. I would always rely on a source of information that has been supported by research conducted in a scientific manner with valid control experiments and would enquire proof to those articles in health magazines or the web.
In order to make an informed decision when choosing a treatment, I would look into as many possible treatments as I could come across and take into consideration the success rate, quality of life and side effects of the treatment. Also, I would make sure to choose a professional physician that is specializes in the type of cancer that I have been diagnosed with. Physicians that practice naturopathy are not allowed to provide cancer treatment by law, however, learning the benefits of a detox regime will enhance my immune system and will have stronger defenses in case I decide to start chemotherapy and radiations. I would like to direct my questions to a doctor that dedicates time to hear my doubts and provides genuine advice.

I would look beyond chemotherapy, radiation and surgery after considering the stage of tumor development and my specific situation but would definitely fortify my healthy eating and juicing as my complimentary therapy to build up immune system defense in case chemotherapy and radiation were my only option.Alternative approaches such as acupuncture, homoeopathic,  and anthropsophic that are based on spiritual principles could bring emotional stimulation that may induce healing rather than directly curing the illness. However, I believe that people should be aware of and have access to valid sources that critique these alternative practices. Since we know the web contains so much information about many different kinds of treatments, cancer research institutes should have a public website with information regarding these alternatives and each individual should consult with their doctor before practicing if it involves the use of herbal or other kind of medicine specially if it is a complementary treatment to chemotherapy and radiation.

It doesn’t matter how much information people can find on the web about how to live a healthier lifestyle, if the general public does not know how to approach this information and make a decision on whether or not the information is coming from a valid source, then the problem will only become worse. Therefore, we should try to increase awareness about the difference of invalid sources and reliable information. This education should be accessible to parents and children in order to have the skills to learn about diseases that caused by a poor diet, exposure to certain pollutants or chemicals and other controllable life habits. It is important to invest in educating people at an early stage due to the fact that the amount of money that goes to health care would decrease substantially. This is why there should be more health programs that expand to schools, colleges and even at the workplace.

Making the change together : Helpful web sources

I have been a vegan/vegetarian for almost 3 years, and I say veg/vegetarian because I started out as a vegetarian. I knew what kinds of things happened behind the meat industry and then started learning about the egg, milk (Dairy), and other animal products. This is why I made the transition to become a vegan. I was lucky to take a class at SDSU called environmental ethics, where there was a ch
apter that talked about animal rights (not animal welfare). The difference between these two terms, is that animal rights doesn't believe in using animals as means for humans, whether food, clothing, experimentation
on or entertainment. Animal welfare looks for a more humane to continue practices where animals are still being used for food, clothing, experimentation or entertainment. So, I definitely do not support animal welfare. Going back to the subject of animal rights, aside from the health aspects, I agree animals have an intrinsic value, which means that they are valuable beings and their lives should be respected in the same way we respect human life and rights. This intrinsic value helps create that connection from the way we are used to seeing animals and the way we should start seeing them.

The transition from eating meat to a vegetarian diet is not hard at all. If you have a well balanced diet, which is consuming a reasonable amount of veggies, whole grains, legumes, fruits, water, you are definitely within the range of protein, vitamins, calcium, potassium and fiber.

You can obtain the omega3 from flaxseed, chia seeds. I would recommend to stay away from fish. There is no benefit whatsoever if you decide to leave poultry and red meat but still eat fish. It is known that mercury content in fish is becoming a significant health threat. So leaving out red meat to avoid the risk of hypertension of heart disease but still eat fish, you would just get intoxicated wish could be even worse for the offspring. So please consider leaving fish out of your diet.

I will leave some good websites to get your vegetarian/vegan recipes. Remember the transition will be just as hard as you want to make it. I have not gone back to eating meat because I have informed myself and I am convinced that a plant-based diet is beneficial in so many ways.

I will be sharing vegan dishes and show you step by step how to prepare them. You will learn that being a vegan is the simplest, healthiest, and most compassionate way of living.

Love fruits and runs

I love Sprouts because they have such great deals on fruit, veggies and other stuff. I got all these amazing fruit and I made myself a refreshing smoothie. This is what I added:
Banana, half Cantaloupe, mango, kiwi, chard, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flaxseed and some superfood (alfalfa, wheat grass, chlorella, spirulina mix)  it was the most delicious smoothie!

I had not eaten anything after lunch (noon) so I got home, made this smoothie and went on a run with moffin. I just love taking her on a walk or go running with her. I once heard this from someone: "taking your dog on a walk is as essential to them as it is for you to check your email". I check my email at least 20 times a day so I kinda get the idea. However, (my boyfriend was telling me about this) make sure to stop when you see your dog slowing down. . Also, make sure it is a nice day or night and that the sidewalk is safe for you and your dog.

I also try to eat good meals. I don't like to leave home without eating breakfast. An advice I would give to everyone is to prepare your lunch a night before, that way it is ready to pick up the next day. It really helps on time and money! eating out can be a little expensive. I spent 20 dlls at the market and it could last more than a week vs spending 10 dlls a day for lunch and dinner. This kind of things force you in a way to start cooking your own food at home. Because I am a student I understand perfectly that sometimes we wont have all the time in the world to cook but putting a little bit of extra effort and learning to prep simple things such as bean and rice burritos, diced fruit with soy yogurt and granola, quinoa with veggies, tofu-potato-soy mix to make a bunch of yummy burritos..etc (

What a Day!

I feel like I have so many things to say! This summer has definitely been an adventure. I am usually so busy during the year that all I do is study, study, study! It doesnt really bother me much because I love my career. I noticed I didnt mention a bunch of stuff on the first post in regards to myself. Anyway, its a blog and it can pretty much have any order (i guess). I am happy to say that I will be graduating next year with a BS in Environmental Engineering from SDSU!

Every since I started a vegan diet I became very interested in learning more and more about a healthy lifestyle. From nutrition facts, to learning new recipes, having an organized schedule to be able to prep food for the next day etc. My life changed as soon as I changed my eating habits. I started to exercise more, when I go to the store I look for the ingredients in the wrapper or box and make sure they are all natural ingredients. If I dont know about one ingredient, me and my boyfriend tend to look it up on our smartphones (thats another reason why I love smartphones!). I try buying organic. From recent medical studies, I learned I have high toxic(n) levels in my system from consuming a lot of veggies, so the Dr.recommended eating organic veggies.

I must say I dont always have the time to cook, but lately, I've made time to learn different recipes and just be creative! Cooking can be a fun thing to do especially if you do it with someone. Its like chemistry, adding the right ingredient in the right amount and Vuala!
I love going to sprouts (or whatever is open)  go check out veggies, prices and good deals, then I think what would go well with what, and go on to a new adventure. Adventurous is a key word, to be adventurous. I learned this at Olivewood Gardens (not the restaurant!) which is a learning center in National City here in San Diego, CA (in case you are reading this from somewhere else around the world) and we teach children from harvesting their food to learn how to cook simple recipes and we have to follow a pledge in order to be in the kitchen and start cooking.

The focus of the program is to encourage children to eat more veggies (which is what they dislike the most) and be adventurous and try before saying "no". I just love watching the kiddos faces when they take a fist bite. ahh, its getting kind of late but I hope to hear from you. Please share your story, any comment, some advice, anything. Ill be happy to know that you, your friends and family are interested in reading this blog. Please know that this blog is a learning experience for you and for me. I share my stories so people catch at least one thing that may be useful in their daily lives (not to say that I have a perfect life or anything), but I would like to hear your thoughts and even advice! Changing your lifestyle for good, means to be open and willing to learn from others, share your positive vibe and learn how to counteract the negative vibes.

My pets, my family

Moffin is the name of my beautiful dog. She was a street dog from Tijuana and I was able to adopt her through ProvidAnimal which is an animal organization in Tijuana that rescues streets dogs. She joined us almost a year ago, so her birthday is coming up! any gift ideas?
Eve is the name of that beautiful white with gray spots cat. She joined us about 4 years ago. We found her alone in the middle of the street and was probably a few weeks old. These two beauties are the smartest and most loving beings in the family, including myself of course :)
Tell me a little bit about your pets..

Why Change for Better Living?

This is probably a good question to start. It all began one day when I found a little vegan booklet on the ground. I picked up the booklet and turned page after page. I read and saw so many things I didnt like. I felt really confused. I always thought I loved animals and respected their lives until I saw those pictures in that little book. I saw blood, knives, suffering, and pain. I spent all day thinking about it and there was nothing that could make me feel better. I didnt want to eat, sleep,..I couldnt even do any homework. I was in shock. The next day when I woke up, I realized I could start doing something to change what I had seen on that book, and that is when I decided to change my eating habits. I thought that if I considered myself as someone who cared about animals, my eating habits would have to change. It was the time when I used to work at the Zoo of San Diego. We taught children about the amazing things of wildlife in order to create awareness for animal species conservation. We were teaching the children to grow love for nature and animals, but why wild animals only? what about cows, pigs and chicken? Dont they also deserve a better life? dont they feel, eat, sleep, play? I made a connection. Very logical to me. Not very logical to others.
I grew up in Mexico, in a neighborhood with streets dogs and cats. We always adopted any animal in need. (well, kind of)..my parents wouldn't always let us, but we pretty much grew up surrounded by some sort of pet..(cats, dogs, turtles, rabbits, ..) I never made any connection between my dinner plate and the actual animal that got killed and was served at our dinner table. I n
ever learned the atrocities behind a real farm until I started college.
Now the years have passed and I think to myself everyday, what have we turned into? so much blood, so much suffering so we can get served death meat at our table? without any effort because the food industry will take care of it. I thought to myself..this is not right.
There are many studies that show that consuming animal product(eggs, dairy, meat, fish, poultry) lead to certain types of cancer, hypertension, heart disease and more. So why not consider a diet that will be healthy and cruelty-free? Why not leave in a word of respect between human and non-human beings and be able to share of what nature provided us since the begging of the years? Why teach our children that eating meat is right when there is so much pain and suffering in the process?

....I am now sitting outside, in my house's porch with my dog, and to me it is so fulfilling, so perfect. The perfect night, quite, dark, and my dog. A dog who suffered in the street since she was born, used to eat whatever she would find on the ground, and now, I get to have her sitting right next to me. I get to name her Moffin and I get to share my life, this moment with her because she is not my pet, she is a special member in my family....and maybe, adopting a similar attitude towards them, we could build up what we have forgotten throughout the years, compassion, care, and love to them and our mother
nature....
